Bikepacking Bag Makers: The Ultimate Index
Updated
Five years ago we started getting to know the bag makers. At the time, no one was keeping a serious list of them, so we started ours. The ones who, more often than not, stitch their first prototypes in a spare bedroom or a tiny corner of a garage, then post a grainy photo on Instagram hoping someone notices. Others, like Tailfin, Apidura, and Arkel, have grown into proper companies with teams and premises behind them, and they belong here just as much. What began as an annual roundup has turned into this: a living index of the independent makers, the cottage studios, and the larger producers building the gear we actually ride with.
It's been a slow, rewarding thing to keep up with. Bikepacking bags are one of the last strongholds of genuine craftsmanship in cycling, a place where a rider can still email someone and receive, a few weeks later, a bag made to spec by the same hands that designed it. The materials experimentation alone is remarkable, with makers welding, laser-cutting, and 3D-printing their way into solutions you won't find on any factory spec sheet. That matters to us, and it's part of why this index exists.
We keep it alive. New makers get added, existing ones evolve, some close up shop. Similar energy lives in our running ultralight gear makers index, covering the tents, quilts, and stoves that sit in the same cottage-industry corner of cycling. If you're a maker and you'd like your company included, please get in touch.

VAP Cycling ๐ฎ๐น

Vap was founded in 2014 near Venice, Italy. Vap is the first Italian company (I have come across) that is focused on making impressive bikepacking gear. Looking at the Vap lineup, you can almost smell the quality. All the Vap products have a highly crafted and designed feel to them that you expect from Italian products. They don't come in many colorsโdark and darker for that intense, ultra look. All the bags are waterproof and seemingly built for anything you can throw at them. My instinct is that we could be looking at the new Apidura here.

Wit Slingers ๐ณ๐ฑ

Wit Slingers was founded in early 2021 by a dutch bag designer based in Leipzig, Germany. I absolutely love everything about Wit Slingers' bags. It's easy to see that the founder, Tijmen, has impeccable taste. The details of the bags, the presentationโeverything reeks of quality and love for craft. Tijmen and I had a funny conversation about what Wit Slingers meant. I assumed it had something to do with British banter but I was way off. Tijmen describes the meaning as โa Dutch pun on someone who sells (slings) white (wit). Back when I started out I refused to make anything but white bags. The white bags disappeared but the name stuck.โ
