
Waiting outside a bookstore for my wife and kids, I was working to keep my patience in check. We were, after all, on vacation in <a href="https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tours" target="_blank">Tours, France</a>, and had endless cafes and cobblestone streets to explore. After about 20 minutes, I finally walked into the store and was instantly blown away by how wonderfully quaint it was. The kids were lost in books, and my wife was in conversation with the friendly staff. I found myself suddenly interested as I meandered to the back of the shop, where I found the graphic novel section. I am not a huge graphic novel fan, but one book seemed to stand out amongst the violent vampire novels and almost seemed to sing to me. Simply called "La Ride," I was drawn into the wonderful illustrations and warm colors of the book's cover. I purchased it on the spot.

In the following days, I immersed myself in "La Ride" and had an amazing time doing so. Despite growing up as a French Canadian, reading French has always been a challenge for me, and I needed my son, who attends a French school in Canada, to help me with it. Without giving away too much of the plot, the story opens with a bike courier who realizes that the distance he covered delivering food would have taken him from Paris to Nepal. He immediately calls a friend who works at an ad agency (which hit a little too close to home for me as I spent years dreaming of being out there on my bike). Together, they decide to take control of their lives and embark on a 500 km route through France.

"La Ride" is replete with insightful reflections that any long-distance bikepacker or tourer would relate to. It touches on the common observations on modernity that keep most of us pedaling and searching for adventure in the tranquility of nature. The conversations, agreements (and disagreements) between the characters are reminiscent of those that invariably occur between riders after arduous battles in the saddle. A particularly amusing scene is when they encounter a group of road cyclists who are perplexed by their attire, bags, and bikes, leading to an impromptu race. All of these elements are drawn from real-life experiences, making the story all the more engrossing. Florien's fluid illustration style complements the narrative perfectly. It's challenging to put into words, but there's an inherent accuracy in the portrayal of action in the characters, the contours of their bikes, and the curves of their drop bars and brake levers.

The bookshop graciously provided me with Simon Boileau's Instagram account, allowing me to contact the author of "La Ride." I was thrilled to have the opportunity to learn more about the story and ask questions. As I suspected, many of the anecdotes in "La Ride" are based on Simon's and Florent's personal experiences. The book initially began as an Instagram account that chronicled their adventures in cartoon form, and as interest grew, a publisher approached them about creating a book. It took two years of writing, storyboarding, and illustrating for "La Ride" to be brought to fruition.

"La Ride" is a stunning and contemplative exploration of the activity we all cherish. While knowing French can certainly enhance the experience, it is not a prerequisite for appreciating the novel's beauty. Even without a translator, one can still relish the artwork and glean the story's essence, making it an excellent addition to any bookshelf or coffee table.

<a href="https://instagram.com/la_ride_" target="_blank">"La Ride"</a> is a French graphic novel about two friends who jettisoned their hectic city lives in search of adventure. Written by <a href="https://instagram.com/simonboileau.jpg" target="_blank">Simon Boileau</a> and beautifully illustrated by <a href="https://instagram.com/florent__pierre" target="_blank">Florent Pierre</a>, the novel is full of situations and emotions that only come from the experience of traveling by bike.


Artists are the lifeblood of adventure cycling and we are always on the lookout for people doing great stuff. Recently, we stumbled upon Spencer Hawkes, also known as <a href="https://www.spencerhawkes.com/nomadpatches" target="_blank">Nomad Patches</a> (<a href="https://www.instagram.com/nomadpatches/" target="_blank">@nomadpatches</a>), a Portland-based illustrator, and designer whose work is not only visually stunning but also practical. Spencer creates biking-related designs that he transforms into patches, which can then be sewn onto anything from bike bags to shorts.

Spencer has been crafting patches for the past eight years. His business, like many small businesses, was started by chance. It all began when he designed a patch specifically for <a href="https://www.spencerhawkes.com/nomadpatches/bike-pack-patch" target="_blank">a family bike tour</a>. However, his fabricator had a minimum order size of 50, which was a lot more than the nine riders on the tour. Not wanting to waste the extra patches, he decided to put them up for sale on his Etsy store. From there, his business took off. He continued designing patches and selling them online, building up his business one patch at a time.

Spencer keeps a long list of future patch ideas on his phone. When a new idea strikes him, he first sketches it out in pencil before moving it to the computer to be illustrated and proofed by his manufacturer, <a href="https://fallscreekoutfitters.com/" target="_blank">Falls Creek Outfitters</a>. Alongside his own creations, Spencer takes on <a href="https://www.spencerhawkes.com/#/hike-ledyard/" target="_blank">commissioned</a> and <a href="https://www.spencerhawkes.com/nomadpatches/not-lost-patch" target="_blank">collaborative</a> work as well. He is always looking for new and exciting projects to work on, so if you're in need of patches for your future endeavors, Nomad Patches is undoubtedly the place to go. Over the past 6 months, I have had the privilege of getting to know some of the warmest and most authentic bikepackers on earth, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/adventuresbycycle/" target="blank">Sam Rice</a> and <a href="https://www.instagram.com/becbycycle/" target="blank">Bec Norman</a>. Together Sam and Bec have bikepacked some fantastic parts of the world including <a href="https://theradavist.com/eating-and-not-riding-the-transardinia-trail/" target="blank">Sardinia</a> and <a href="https://bikepacking.com/plog/slugpacking-old-ghost-road/" target="blank">New Zealand</a>. From the outside, they have that thing that many of us deeply crave-the ability to go where you want, when you want, and to do it all by bike. The ride that never stops. Their story is better than fiction. After knowing Sam for only a few weeks and without much riding experience, Bec agreed to join him on bike adventures around the world and never looked back. Fantastic.

When I first met them, Sam and Bec were packing up to leave Australia for a trip through Thailand. Even though I haven't biked in Thailand, I have spent a lot of time there and knew about the tough pushes that lay ahead of them. As I spoke to them more and more, I was lucky to hear about their travels and experiences in real-time.

The video was produced with Sam and Bec's friends <a href="https://firstpersoncontent.com.au/" target="blank">First Person Content</a> who not only brought some world-class cinematography to the film they also managed to capture who Sam and Bec are as people: genuine, warm, and full of life. Personally, I loved the film for the appearance of some unexpected themes like alcohol awareness and mindfulness: two topics that mean a great deal to me. This film is so much more than bikepacking porn...it's human.

If there was ever a Bag of the Year Award (note: there needs to be a Bag of the Year Award), last year's prize would have undoubtedly gone to Vancouver's HMPL Design for the <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/Cc8inorvC8R/" target="_blank">clear pocket framebag</a>. The clear pocket was such a simple way to allow a rider to jazz up their bikepacking kit that it was almost laughable. Once you saw it, it was hard to imagine any framebag without it.

It seems Scott and Matt took the learnings from that bag and pushed the clear envelope even harder to create the world's first fully transparent vinyl framebag. Looking at the photos makes you wonder how it took this long for such a wonderful idea to enter the world. Over the next week, Scott will be snapping some more photos of the bag filled with fun paraphernalia and we hope to update this page as it happens.

Jason Quinn is an engineer and television broadcast manager from New Mexico, USA. I started speaking to Jason over Instagram last year as I noticed he is a mountain biker and makery type—my favorite combo of human traits. I also had a chuckle at his Instagram handle <a href="https://www.instagram.com/rolling_a_fatty/" target="blank">@rolling_a_fatty</a> for which he designed some pretty awesome t-shirts.

Jason's Instagram feed is an eclectic mix of the stuff he creates that may or may not be cycling-related. Some of the items that Jason makes out of stone and wood include bowls, plates, skulls, and mask carvings. All the natural materials are sourced while Jason is either out riding his fat bike or his motorbike through rural New Mexico.

About a month ago, he uploaded a photo of a circuit board stem cap that caught my attention. I have seen a few stem caps now that have been made out of non-traditional materials but nothing quite like a circuit board. The project was conceived by his friend <a href="https://www.instagram.com/vintagemotovixen/" target="blank">@vintagemotovixen</a> but seems to have grown in scale since that prototype. Jason calls them E/Caps and builds them from broken TVs and transmission equipment from the TV station he works at. If you dig them, you can get them on his <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/HighAltitudeStudio?ref=search_shop_redirect" target="blank">Etsy store</a>. Wild stuff.

I first came across the Instagram account of  <a href="https://www.instagram.com/kook.grin.media/" target="_blank">Kook Grin Media</a> about six months ago. I was immediately drawn to the quick and fun illustrations of bikepacking rigs and 4x4 campers. The illustrations made me think of a new bikepacking version of Rat Fink and I soon came to appreciate the artist as well as the art. Kook Grin is 23-year-old Aigaras Stuart from Fraser, Colorado who started out as a tattoo artist before finding illustration. The Kook Grin Instagram feed is full of fatbike skids and snow surfs that will give you a giggle and get you off the couch.

It was no wonder I came Aigaras's across work. If you are on this site, there's a great chance you have come came across it too. Aigaras's work is simply all over the bikepacking world and once you see his style, you can spot it in many, many places. Aigaras has done some solid work for bikepacking.com, Old Man Mountain Racks, Freshpack Outdoor, Fish Ski Designs, Bedrock Sandals, Buffalo Bags, Farther Bag Company, Send It Safely, and more. We hope that Aigaras will have some time for us soon one day too.

The Art Of Kook Grin


We just love coming across makers doing great things on Instagram. We especially love it when they craft products out of recycled and up-cycled parts. Up-cycling has been a common theme on this site but we are still surprised at how little this seemingly untapped resource gets utilized. 

I happened upon Tel Aviv-based, <a href="https://www.toobrecycled.com/" target="_blank">Toob</a>, last week and was blown away at how well the brand presents itself and its products to the world. I reached out to the founder Roy who told me that he collects used tubes from local bike shops to craft nifty accessories like rack straps and keychains. Each tube gets a thorough cleaning and inspection before moving on to its new life. Roy is taking something that is ultimately on its way to becoming pollution and turning it into thoughtful, beautiful accessories with a much longer lifespan. We especially love Roy's handmade basket straps.

Call me nuts but I'm not a huge fan of bikepacking videos. They tend to make something very special to me way too available and many seem to repeat common themes with minimal fresh perspectives. Of course, this is a close-minded blanket statement and I probably need to evolve my opinions a bit. A couple of days ago when my buddy Salty Beard sent me a video called The Dark Divide and a note that simply stated “this is on the to-do list”, I knew I had to check it out. And I am so glad that I did.

The Dark Divide (from Mercator Films and Evergreen Gravel Racing) is a 30-minute video that will keep you learning and interested the entire time. It follows 10 cyclists from Olympia, Washington to Portland, Oregon over a 330 mi (517 km) route. At its core, it is a bikepacking video sure, but it feels like so much more in many ways. 

The video is cut with interview scenes of Kris Peters the council chair of the Squaxin Island Tribe, the local indigenous peoples along the route. Kris' voiceovers are a sober reminder of how the indigenous people who lived in the area for millennia were forcibly removed and resettled from their own lands. At one point, Kris makes a fantastic point that recreation is a 'missed opportunity' to bring together conservationists, the government, local tribes, and people into one discussion. He says, “in today's society, everything has become a resource and some people will continue to use it until it is gone”. The video then cuts to clear-cut mountain ranges that I have seen way too many times here in British Columbia as well. Fuck, humans are arrogant.

The bikepacking parts of the video manage to capture the joy and emotion I have felt so many times being on my bike in the middle of nowhere. Maybe it's so vivid through this video as our little island is very close to the route and the terrain is similar. One quote that summarizes bikepacking so well for me comes from Ben at 12:24… "I'm feeling so fucked up mentally and physically right now but there's no place I would rather be". I give the team props on this route (RWGPS here) they set out on. It is a lot more than simple gravel roads. At many points, the group is bush-whacking through the snow and pushing through some serious elevation in the dark. This is not a route for the faint of heart and may be something you wouldn't want to tackle solo.

This is some world-class storytelling and filmmaking. Take 30 minutes and go on a trip.
